1. Overview

Hanyu is an offline-first Chinese learning app. We believe your learning data belongs to you alone. This app does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data with third parties.

Core Principle: All your learning progress, settings, and activity data stay on your device. Zero third-party SDKs, zero analytics, zero trackers, zero ads.

2. Data We Collect

Minimal Only data necessary for learning features, all stored on your device:

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

None The following is never collected:

Personal identity (name, email, phone, age, gender)
Device identifiers (IDFA, IDFV, advertising IDs)
Location data (GPS, IP geolocation)
Network activity or browsing history
Biometric data (face, fingerprint, health)
Photos, camera, microphone, contacts
Analytics, crash logs, behavioral telemetry

4. Network & Third-Party Services

Zero network connectivity. No HTTP requests, API calls, or data transmissions. All content bundled locally. Audio via built-in AVSpeechSynthesizer.

No analytics SDKs — No Firebase, Mixpanel, etc.
No ad SDKs — No advertising frameworks
No crash reporting — No data sent to monitoring services
No social login — No Facebook, Google auth
No third-party dependencies — Only Apple native frameworks

5. iCloud Backup (Optional)

User-initiated Optional iCloud backup for cross-device continuity:

How: Tap "Backup to iCloud" → data written to your iCloud container (iCloud.com.hanyu.app).
Not automatic: Backup/restore are manual operations.
Your data stays yours: iCloud container tied to your Apple ID. No one else can access it.
Backed up: All learning progress, preferences, mistakes, statistics, achievements.
Not backed up: Purchase status (Keychain, device-only).

6. In-App Purchases

Purchases processed via Apple StoreKit. Payment handled entirely by Apple — we receive no payment info. Stored locally in Keychain.

7. Permissions

Only one optional permission:

Notifications Optional — only if you enable "Review Reminders"

Daily study reminders

No other permissions: Location, Camera, Photos, Contacts, Microphone, Health, Calendar are never accessed.

8. Data Retention & Deletion

All data stored locally. Delete by:

Deleting the app (removes all SwiftData)
Disabling iCloud Drive for this app in iOS Settings

No remote server exists to contact for deletion.

9. Children's Privacy

Suitable for all ages. No data collected from children or adults. No chat, social features, or third-party content exposure. In-app purchases require Apple ID auth controlled by parent/guardian.

10. Changes to This Policy

If data practices change, this policy will be updated with the new effective date. Given offline-first architecture, future changes would be minimal and transparent.
